Matthew K. Wallace, M.D., of Northwest Orthopaedic Specialists performed the 100th outpatient joint replacement procedure at The Orthopaedic Surgery Center on Tuesday, Nov. 7. Patients seeking consultation for outpatient joint replacements or other orthopaedic procedures are encouraged to call 509-344-2663 to contact The Orthopaedic Surgery Center, located in downtown Spokane at 601 West Fifth Avenue, Suite 500.

The Orthopaedic Surgery Center at Northwest Orthopaedic Specialists staffs specialty-trained orthopaedic surgeons in their outpatient joint replacement program, which had its first procedure on Nov. 2, 2016. Since the program began, its surgeons have performed 60 total hip replacements, 38 total knee replacements and 2 total shoulder replacements. The latest procedure performed by Dr. Wallace was the 38th total knee replacement and 100th outpatient replacement performed.

“At Northwest Orthopaedic Specialists, we are dedicated to meeting the needs of the community and continually improving the patient experience, and we developed this program with those goals in mind,” says Dr. Wallace. “We are proud to offer our patients these state-of-the-art procedures, and it’s been an honor to perform this landmark surgery as part of the continued success of our outpatient joint replacement program.”

In a traditional joint replacement, the patient stays in the hospital for several days before going home. In an outpatient joint replacement, the patient is able to go home hours after surgery.

Benefits of the outpatient procedure include:
•    Allowing the patient to heal in the comfort of their own home
•    Reduced risk of infection from the hospital environment
•    Cost savings from the shortened stay

Consistently ranked above the 90th percentile for exceptional patient satisfaction, The Orthopaedic Surgery Center performs over 5,000 orthopaedic surgeries and more than 3,500 interventional pain cases in their outpatient center every year, and its leaders remain dedicated to offering state-of-the-art, evidence-based care for better outcomes and patient experiences.
