Diabetic Foot

How Does Diabetes Affect the Foot?

Diabetes is a condition in which the body produces insufficient insulin, resulting in excessive levels of sugar in the blood. One of the symptoms of diabetes is neuropathy (the impairment of the nervous system), which can cause a lack of sensation in the extremities—especially the foot. When this happens, foot injuries may go unnoticed, leading to serious, even life-threatening problems such as systemic infection.

As a diabetic, you should inspect your feet regularly for injuries. Even small issues, such as abrasions from too-tight shoes, can quickly become serious. It's important to take these wounds seriously as diabetic foot ulcers (skin wounds that do not heal properly) precede 84% of all lower leg amputations.
