Plantar Faciitis

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis, also called "policeman's heel," is an irritation of the thick tissue, known as the plantar fascia, located on the bottom of the foot. Plantar fascia is a thick band that connects the heel bone to the toes creating and supporting the natural arch of the foot. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia is overstretched and/or overused, and it makes walking very painful and much more difficult.

Treatment

Non-surgical treatments include pain relievers to relieve pain and inflammation, physical therapy, orthotics, and night splints.

Injections and surgery are also used to treat plantar fasciitis. Surgical treatment is only considered after all conservative treatment has failed.

Preparing for My Appointment & New Patient Forms

Dr. Padrta agreed to see me for a knee replacement but I was having trouble with my foot too so since I was coming from out of town we did back to back appointments. He immediately stated that the foot surgery needed to take place prior to the knee replacement. He explained that the foot was getting worse and worse, the knee would remain the same forever, so if I did not have the foot fixed first I would not be able to do the rehabilitation that is required after a knee surgery as I could not walk on my foot properly and putting pressure on it was painful. I am so grateful that he took care of that issue for me. I had a successful surgical outcome and will wait the required 4-5 months after anesthesia before I do the knee replacement. The staff at Northwest Orthopaedic Specialists was fantastic, arranging appointments, setting up a portal for me, answering my questions and doing the required followups. I was so grateful since I had to travel so many miles to see him that they were more than willing to adjust appointment times for my convenience. I would highly recommend this team for any orthopedic problems.” — Patricia V.

“I saw Dr. Shirzad for a problem with a very painful foot. As a person with several other physical issues, having my ability to walk without having severe pain was a big problem for me. He was able to tell me exactly the cause for my pain, the choices I had, and acknowledged the need to consider the other physical conditions when planning my treatment. He performed extensive surgery on my foot, and while I am not yet to the walking stage, not having the constant pain is such a relief. His calm, caring manner made me very comfortable with the treatment plan, and I look forward to a summer of enjoyable walking. I would refer him to anyone with a foot issue!” — Diane B.
