Treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Open Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery

Carpal tunnel release surgery is a procedure used to relieve the pressure on your nerve caused by carpal tunnel syndrome. Though there are several different techniques your wrist doctor may use to perform carpal tunnel release, the goal is to open the “roof” of the tunnel through which your affected nerve passes, dividing it in two. Over time, new tissue will bridge this gap, resulting in a larger tunnel with extra room for your nerve.

Using the most common form of carpal tunnel release, the open technique, your wrist surgeon will access your affected nerve through the middle of your palm. Using the closed technique for carpal tunnel release, your hand doctor will make a small incision in your wrist and your palm, then use an endoscope to open the “roof” of the tunnel through your wrist.

WALANT technique for Carpel Tunnel Release

Wide Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet (WALANT) is a technique for hand and wrist surgery without sedation or general anesthesia. Throughout the procedure, patients are awake, there is no tourniquet used, and anesthesia is not administered. This technique offers many advantages over standard procedures including being less expensive and a healthier alternative to sedation or general anesthesia. Carpel Tunnel Release Surgery is one of the procedures that can sometimes be done using the WALANT technique.
